Rapid technological advances have made online courses increasingly more accessible, more friendly and much more social. In the past decade, these advances, and the exploding need for lifelong learning, have resulted in a quantum growth in the number of online courses available and the number of students taking these courses. More than 23 million students will be enrolled in distance learning courses in 2004, up from 710,000 in 1998. Fifteen percent of all higher education students are taking distance learning courses, up from 5 percent in 1998.
